Change Your Business Name on Facebook – Updated!

Did you misspell your business name on Facebook?  Maybe you changed your business name and need to keep your Facebook page, but have been unable to change your business name.  Perhaps you simply realized that the original name made it difficult for people to find you.

This was the situation of one of our customers, Home Instead Senior Care of San Antonio.  Their username is great, Facebook.com/HomeInsteadSanAntonio, but their business name, HomeInsteadSATX made it very difficult for people to find them by searching.  Who is going to search “Home Instead SATX”?  Because they had over 100 fans, they were out of luck.

Until today!  Now, you can go to a Facebook Business Name Change request form.
UPDATE: As of 4/6/2012, this page is no longer available.  If anyone finds a new form, please share it with us in the comments.

UPDATE: As of 3/4/2014, Facebook has made this much easier!  Simply go to Edit Page>Update Page Info, and next to your current business name select “edit”.

Change Facebook Page Name

Now you just enter the desired page name and the reason for the request.

This despite the fact that if you search Facebook help, it’ll tell you, “We currently do not provide page name, type or URL changes. These options cannot be changed once you’ve selected them. We suggest that you delete your page and start over if you need to adjust them. “

Facebook - Change Your Business Page Name Changing from HomeInsteadSATX to Home Instead San Antonio will make it easier for people to find them.

All you need is the current page name, the desired page name, the URL to the page and the reason for the change.  I chose “Other”.  After submission, you get a “Thanks for contacting Facebook. You should receive an email response shortly.”  They meant it.  I had it in seconds.  Here’s what it said:

“Hi,

We may be able to assist you with this request. In order to update your Page name, please make sure to provide the following information:

If you selected, “My Page name has changed,” please make sure that you have attached documentation showing your new business name as well as its address. An example of this is a utility or phone bill.

If you selected, “My Page name is misspelled,” sit tight and we will get to your request as soon as possible.

Please note these changes may take up to 3 days to process. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Thanks,

The Facebook Team

In the article you said you selected “Other.” What do they require you to provide as the reason for name change? I manage a page with the same situation outlined in the article and I don’t have a misspelling or business name change to provide. Thank you!

    • Alisa Meredith

      Hi Patrick.

They didn’t say exactly what guideline my original page name did not meet, so I think they were being generous, as my situation didn’t exactly look like a guideline problem. But, their confirmation message said:
“Page name does not meet the Facebook Pages Guidelines. To adhere to these guidelines, your Page has been renamed to: ”

Here is an excerpt of the Guidelines,
“Page Names and Facebook Web Addresses
Page names and Facebook Web Addresses must accurately reflect Page content. We may remove administrative rights or require you to change the Page name and Facebook Web Address for any Page that fails to meet this requirement.
      Page names must:
      i. not consist solely generic terms (e.g., “beer” or “pizza”);
      ii. use proper, grammatically correct capitalization and may not include all capitals, except for acronyms;
iii. not include character symbols, such as excessive punctuation and trademark designations; and
iv. not include superfluous descriptions or unnecessary qualifiers.
      B. Name Changes and Migrations
We will only process name changes and migrations that do not result in a misleading or unintended connection. For example, we will allow local to global migrations, such as “Facebook France” to “Facebook”, but will not allow global to local migrations, or location to location migrations, such as “Facebook France” to “Facebook Russia”. Additionally, you may not request a name change or migration that would result in re-categorizing a product Page to a brand Page, a generic or opinion Page to a brand Page, or a Group to a Page. All migrations are at our discretion and are final.”

      The rest are here: https://www.facebook.com/page_guidelines.php

    • Alisa Meredith

Oh, and they do not ask for an explanation when you choose “Other”. Let us know how you make out!

  2. Hi, and thanks for this article.

I’ve tried this page name request and so far have been unsuccessful. My business name has changed…the issue is not a simple misspelling.

I have sent Facebook the documentation they requested showing my new business name and address. Even though I don’t have a utility bill, I did send three photos of pieces of mail with my new name and address.

Facebook has not responded to my request, as of a week later. Since I didn’t hear back from them, I sent in a new request and didn’t even get the standard reply email. I got nothing. I have also sent a followup email asking for a response….and…nothing.

This is very disappointing. I wonder if anyone has really been able to use this name change request successfully?

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi Barbara. I’m sorry you’re not having success with this. I have done this twice. I suggest submitting the request, but choosing another reason, even if that reason is not accurate. So far, I’ve changed a page name for spelling issues and “other”. Have not tried name change.

      Keep us posted!

    • hi, i know this post was a while ago but i have this problem. i submitted 3 different requests and not even received a confirmation email when they state they would. its very frustrating

  3. Amanda

Ahh looks like they took the form away…. this really stinks! I want to change my fan page name and not lose my fans… It will be tough starting over.

    • Alisa Meredith

Oh, no! Thanks for the update, Amanda. Do you have more than 100 fans?

    • Alisa Meredith

UPDATE: As of 5/21/2012, Facebook has made this much easier! Simply Edit your page, go to Basic Information, and next to your current business name (below the map) select “Request Change”.

Hope it’s not too late, Amanda!

  4. Hi, Thanks for nice article but “request change” link does not appear in my pages settings.. I saw many tutorials about this and it must be in “update info” settings next to page name.. But it is not..

    Help Please.

  5. Glen

I was able to change my business name. Right under the map where “request change” is supposed to be, there appears a “Name” Field. I just typed in my change. I was logged in as the business.

    • Alisa Meredith

Thanks for replying to Givi, Glen. Glad it worked for you. Things change practically on a daily basis. Have you tried again, Givi?

  6. Gavin

Any idea how/what to write in the document?

As a nightclub promoter, I’ve started a new club night – but would like to keep the remaining 1,500 people on my old page.

  7. Kamal

    Hi,

I would like the change my business name but I don’t have the option of ‘Request change’ next to the business name! I have written to them two weeks ago but have not received any response from them.

    Any idea?

    Thanks,
    K

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi Kamal, Hmmmm, that is strange. I just looked on one of my pages again from my profile and I still have the option to change. Maybe try another browser? If you want me to try it for you, can can make me an admin temporarily. You can Email me at alisa@scalablesocialmedia.com.

I won’t be offended if you don’t take me up on it :)

      • kamal

        Hi Alisa,
I have also another page that I have the option. My friend created the 2nd page and I believe she created as local business. It seems the options are different for each category!!
Next to the name is only a question mark which displays a help text.
I should ask my friend to get her permission to make you admin.

        Thanks for understanding.

        Kamal

      • Kamal

        Hi again,
I was able to get ‘request change’ option visible by changing the category of page.
Now, the document that we have is a confirmation document from Lithuanian company house. Is that enough?

        Thanks,
        Kamal

  8. Alisa Meredith

Hi Kamal. I’m glad you were able to get it to work! Honestly, I don’t know if that’ll do it, but it’s worth a try. They never asked us for any confirmation documents.

  9. Jennifer V

Does this change also give you the ability to change the URL? Would like to make sure the new name of the page (new business name) matches the URL. If i change our business name to xyzBrands can i also change my url to be facebook.com/xyzBrands?

    THANKS!

  10. Pranav

    same problem which kamal had..

I would like the change my business name but I don’t have the option of ‘Request change’ next to the business name!

    can you help…?

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi Pranav, I would try changing the page’s category, like Kamal did, and see if the option then appears. If the category doesn’t fit, you can go back and change it later.

  11. Pranav

i tried all combinations, its still not working for me

  12. Pranav

could you tell me another solution or become an admin and check it for me…

    • Alisa Meredith

I replied to your email, Pranav. I’ll be happy to look. Just might be a delay as I’m traveling tomorrow.

    • Alisa Meredith

What’s the URL of your page? I’ll like it…

  13. Pranav

hi here is the url https://www.facebook.com/EnlightenFilmSociety

    awaiting your reply

  14. Alisa Meredith

I liked you as Alisa Meredith this morning.

  15. Flo

    Hey
    i would like to merge:

    https://www.facebook.com/Throwholics
    https://www.facebook.com/Throwholics2

But unfortunately the name of https://www.facebook.com/Throwholics2 is not close enough.

The box: Reuest change: does not appear
and i tried every copmbination of category.

    does anybody know another solution?

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi Flo. I see what the problem is. Your URLs are nearly identical, but the page NAMES (“Throwholics” and “Throwers”) are not. If you could change one of the page’s names and you would be able to merge.

However, because you have over 200 “likes” on both of them, that is not an option for you.

Here’s what you could try: Report one page as a duplicate. To do this, click on the wheel icon on the left (next to the ‘Like’ button) and click Report page>choose duplicate> then copy and paste the URL in of the page you want to KEEP. Eventually you should see a “merge” option, but proceed at your own risk.

      Find more at http://socialstrand.com/2012/03/29/merging-multiple-facebook-pages-clarified-username-vs-name/

We’d love it if you’d let us know what happens.

  16. Flo

    Dear Alisa Meredith,
    thank you for your reply.

I tried already to “request” a page merge and i tried to “reqeust a name change” but both does not appear.

Therefore i “reported” the page to Facebook but i dont think they will ever reply to it.

The problem with “report as duplicate” is that they just might delete the page instead of giving me the option to merge it.

    Is there no other possibilty?
Maybe a hotline i could call??

  17. Alisa Meredith

Hi Flo. As I mentioned, you won’t be able to change the page name because you have over 200 likes. That leaves you with only one option: report as duplicate. The intent of that report is to combine two pages, not to delete one.

I am not aware of any other possibility. There is no hotline to call. Sometimes it takes weeks to get a response from Facebook.

  18. Damien

    Hello Alisa,

Thank you so much for your reply :-) But I did it and it was a success… I took back all the process you did and it worked ! thank you for your support :-)

Can you delete the first post so it won’t be referenced with the link of facebook?

Thanks again for your support ! love love love your post !!

    • Alisa Meredith

      Hello again :)

I’m so glad it worked out for you! Sometimes it is just nice to know you are not alone out there. I deleted your first post. Feel free to post your new page URL so we can all check it out.

      See you on Facebook.

  19. Rakzo

    heres my page’s link
    http://www.facebook.com/cataclysmONLINE
can u help me with dat?? please
    thank you. :)

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi, Rakzo! I can’t tell what’s going on from here. If you want to make me an admin on your page, I’ll take a look. I just liked you, so add Alisa Meredith or email address design@ontargetpro.com. Thanks for stopping by!

  20. Hi, We changed the name of our business from Grandale Farm to Grandale Restaurant and I have the documentation to show it. I haven’t been able to find anything on what happens when I do that on facebook – will the old FB name redirect to my new FB name or will all of the links (in so many, many places) have to be changed for people to still end up on my page? Thank you!

  21. Jenniffer

    Hi Alisa,

When I go to edit page and update information there is not an option to change the name on the page. Do you know if Facebook has changed this again?

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi Jenniffer. No, I still see that option. I checked on several other pages that I administer, as well. If you have fewer than 200 fans, you won’t have a “Request Change” link – you’ll just be able to type in a new name. If that’s not your issue, you may need to contact Facebook.

  22. Jenniffer

    Alisa,

Thank you for confirming the option is still there.. We have a few thousand likes so I’m not sure why I’m not seeing the “Request Change” link. I will keep looking. Can you ease any concerns about changing our page name? Will anything else change? Is there any chance of losing current fans or posts in the process? Thanks again!

    • Alisa Meredith

You’re welcome, Jenniffer. Nothing else will change. Unlike changing the username (which changes your URL), you don’t need to worry about updating links online or on printed material. Your page information and fans will be unchanged. This is one of the least trouble-prone changes you can make. No worries!

If you have multiple administrators, see if someone else can look for the option. Also, try other browsers. If all else fails, you can make me an admin temporarily and I’ll look. I’ve liked your page, so you can do that if you are comfortable with it.

  23. Paulo Santos

    Hello Alisa,

    Thank you for this post!
I’m trying to change categories like crazy, but I can`t make the “request change” link appear in my page.
It has a little more than 2000 likes.
Is there any other tip to make it appear?
I have already read all other inquires from othe readers.
    Thank you for your help!

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi Paulo. Thanks for stopping by! To change categories, you do not need to use the “Request Change” link. Simply go to Edit Page>Basic Information and choose a new category. Voila!

Don’t know why you don’t see the change page name link, but fortunately it appears that you don’t need it!

      • Paulo Santos

Actually I’m trying to change the category in order to make the “change request” appear, so I would be able to request a name change :)
I simply want to submitt a change request for my fanpage name, but I tryed everything and nothing happens.
I’m not in US, would it be a cause?

        • Alisa Meredith

Oh, I see. Yes, I’ve been in the situation where I’d try just about anything to kick FB into gear, too! I suppose that COULD be an issue, though I don’t know why it would be. Would you like me to try? If you want to make me admin, you can post your FB page URL and I’ll like it.

  24. Informative and informative discussion. Thank you for actually updating with “this page is no longer available” because quite honestly, every time I look for any help or fixes for FB, I consistently find solutions that no longer work or have outdated pages, so thanks. I stumbled across this page through a search and while it was not exactly what I was looking for, maybe I can ask you this question here.

We recently changed our facebook page NAME. … not the URL. In other words, if you visit our page at https://www.facebook.com/esinteractivewebdesign (not sure if I can include this link, so feel free to remove if necessary), you will see our full NAME. It used to just be “ES Interactive”. We tacked on the words “website development” recently just to elaborate on what we do. Fine, right? Well not really because all friends/followers got a post on their feed telling them we changed our name. I didn’t want that to happen, nevertheless it did and the funny thing is that I didn’t see it on my personal page feed, nor did I see it in any activity logs or anywhere else for that matter…but all friends did see it! So this all begs the question: Do you know how to change the page name (title) as we did WITHOUT broadcasting it to everyone who likes or follows? I have looked high and low and cannot see anything that will allow me to do this without broadcasting it.

Any help you can give would be much appreciated. I will check back for replies. Thank you Alisa.

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi, Eric. Thanks for stopping by! I know the pain of outdated information and I’d hate to frustrate anyone else that way – thanks for noticing!

I appreciate your courtesy, but it does make things so much easier when people include their URL, and I never mind as long as it’s not a spammy post :)

Do you want to change the business name again? I do not think there is a way to turn off that notification. Facebook does like to keep things transparent for page fans, so I see why they do it.

Personally, as a Facebook user, it doesn’t concern me when I get a notification of a page name change. In fact, it serves to remind me that I did like that page and sometimes I’ll go check it out anew. If it were a regular occurrence, I would start to think the page owner was a little disorganized, but that’s the only downside I can think of.

I know it’s not what you were hoping for, but does that help at all?

      • Hi Alisa.

Yep, it helps! I know it’s not a big deal, but the thing is that on the first attempt, we had a misspelling! LOL! So we had to change the name again. Lo and behold, when I found out that everyone on our list got notifications that we changed the name (TWICE), it was pretty embarrassing. Nevertheless, what’s done is done and it will all flow right to the bottom of everyone’s news feeds eventually, if it hasn’t already.

Hey! Thanks for the LIKE on FB. Much appreciated. We don’t really solicit likes on FB which is why we don’t have many – but it’s always nice to see. If you don’t mind, why don’t you email me your email address. Would love to keep in touch for potential future opportunities. You can msg me on FB or I think you have my email address that I entered when leaving my comments.

I see you’re in Maine. I am in Seattle but am actually a transplanted New Yorker and I lived in Boston for 3 years before moving to the Pacific Northwest. I love Maine and really miss New England! I remember trips to Boothbay Harbor when I was very young. Good times!

Thanks for the great site packed with info. Good stuff!

        • Alisa Meredith

Ah, yes, well, we all make typos! And you are right, you are almost certainly the only one who thinks it is a big deal :)

Have you tried Facebook Friday parties? I’ve made a lot of really great connections that way. Some people use them as a “like” trading system, but that’s not how they are intended to be used.

Sure, I’ll send a message to your page. Look forward to keeping in touch. Oh, and I’m glad you like our site – Thanks!

  25. J

    Hello,

I have set up a business facebook page, the problem i have is i now wish to divide it into 2. I would like to change the name of the page, and then make a new business page account using the old name. Do you know if the old name will become available straight away as soon as I change the original pages name? Thanks

    • Alisa Meredith

      Hi, J.

Just to clarify, you mean the name, not the username, right? Username is the URL, and that does not seem to get released right away, and I’m not even sure that it ever does.

However, for the business name, I think you would be OK. Hope that helps.

  26. J

Thanks for your swift reply :)

Yes, I was referring to the url username. I think you may be correct, maybe the url will not be released, so perhaps I would be best of leaving things as they are for now.

    Thank you again, great website.

  27. hi alisa

thank you for this post. ive submitted 3 different requests and not even received a confirmation email when i do what is requested and they state they will formally reply.

im sure others must be having the problem. All i want to do is to put a space between the words of my page name so it comes up in searches!

    any ideas? :)

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi, Reuben. Hmmmm, do you have another admin on the account who can try it? I got my confirmation right away, so I’m suspecting a bug.

  28. Beverly Hall

    Hi Alisa,
We recently changed the name of our business and I’m unable to change it on my profile place. I still work there, it’s just for reference. But if any friends try to search for it they will not find it. It will not let me edit the name, just lets me edit my position. Can you suggest anything? Thanks!

  29. Alisa, good tips. But I still haven’t figured out a solution with my situation. I’m trying to change the company name from Web Tech Labs to the proper WebTechLabs. It is coming back as “Our automated system will not allow that name.” Probably doesn’t meet the quality guidelines you posted above.

  30. Alisa Meredith

Hi, WebTechLabs :). Yes, I imagine that is the reason, though in your case, that is the legitimate business name. I would contact Facebook and request that they allow the change.

  31. celest

Hi Alisa, I need to change my fan page because i change my business name but i already have 3000 fans .. :(
can you tell me how to contact facebook ? I can’t find anywhere their email address .. thank you so much ..

  32. Alisa Meredith

Hi, Celest, did you try the procedure outlined above? It should work for you.

  33. Jan

Hi Alisa, for more than 4 weeks I have been trying to contact FB with my page username request. I filled out different forms. The most promising one should be this: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/360358877344441

I always see the “Thanks for contacting Facebook. You should receive an email response shortly.” but I NEVER get any mail from FB stuff! What should I do? It is so difficult to get any FB support…

    BR
    Jan

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi Jan. I’m sorry for your frustration. I don’t know of any real solution to this other than to keep trying.

  34. Robin

    Hi Alisa

I just sent you a email, hoping you can help us with a Page Name change

    Thanks

    Robin

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi, Robin. Thanks for stopping by. What seems to be the trouble? Did you follow the steps outlined?

  35. Timothy Guest

    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I changed the category on my facebook page. I saved the changes and it shows up as changed when I look at my settings, but when I search my page on facebook search, it still shows the old category. Does anyone know anything about why it wouldn’t be updated to my new category in facebook search?

    Thanks,

    Tim

  36. J

I need to change the name of my FB fan page from blog name to author name (yes, over 200 likes).

I changed from People/Author to Product/Service so that “Request Name Change” pops up. I’ve learned that much.

In filling out the form, however, even if I select misspelling as the reason, it STILL asks for a utility bill with name and address. I don’t have any bills made out to my author name (or even my blog name).

There seems to be no way to get around this. INCREDIBLY frustrating.
Do you know of a way around this?

    Thanks!

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi, J, thanks for stopping by!

Have you tried selecting “Other”? That worked for me, no documentation required.

  37. Hi there,
Have done all the required, but no response from Face Book! Also sent the pdf doc, the works, what now please?

    cheers x

  38. I am trying to get the Page name (not username) changed, but I see no link with request or similar. How do you get to the place, where you can request a change of the name?

  39. Alisa Meredith

Hi, Daniel. Thanks for visiting! I just tried it from my iPad and got to it by going to edit page>edit page info. It’s the very first item. It’s possible they changed it again!

  40. Scalable should be congratulated for having about the only mention of this topic. My poblem is that after changing the url (from one ending in 1862 – the year before the event the page is intended to commemorate) it’s impossible to get there by way of a search engine. You land on facebook’s “Page not Found” thing with a picture of a bandaged thumb. It’s my understanding that what’s needed is a redirect.. I sent a query from facebook’s question box located on a page having improper page documentation that gives a warning they’re not likely to answer when you click “Send”. Any ideas?

  41. Alisa Meredith

Hi, Bruce. Thanks for your kind words. Would you care to provide a link to your page? I don’t have any ideas off the top of my head, but maybe if I could poke around…

  42. Demonte

Wanted to know if you could provide some assistance in changing my business name? I have read all the other post which are amazing but can’t seem to get anywhere on my end. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I need the name to be switched from gurillamarketing to duo brandinganddesign.
    Thank you.

    • Alisa Meredith

Hi, Demonte. You don’t see the option to edit your page name when you go to “Edit Page”>>> “Update Page Info”?

  43. Yes i see the option but we have over 6000 likes. The save button in greyed out,

    • Alisa Meredith

Check out this help topic: https://www.facebook.com/help/262981810477512/. Under “Page Names” you will see this suggestion,

“If 200 or more people like your Page, you can submit a name change request. Keep in mind that you can only change your Page name once. If your request is approved, you won’t be able to change your Page name again. To submit a name change request:

From the top of your Page, click Edit Page
      Select Update Page Info
Click Name and click Request Change
Fill out the form and click Send”

  44. Yes, I followed all of those steps, however when i go to request the change the there is not an option to request change? No button or means to request the change. I have tried to change my category as well to see if it would show up with no avail.

  45. April

Keep in mind that if you have 200+ fans, you are required to submit documentation to change the name of your page. “An example of acceptable documentation is a utility or phone bill. Unacceptable documentation include logos, websites, and business cards.”

  46. hi,

Welcome, Alan! Do you still have the email? If so, have you tried replying to it? I can’t remember if mine came from a noreply address or not.

Quick question, I need to change the name of my business on my Facebook page (slightly) but am wondering if people will have to re-”like” my page. I have a little over 600 likes and don’t want everyone to have to re-”like” it. Will changing the name cause this problem, or does everything remain the same when the name is edited?

    Thank you in advance!

Nope, they won’t have to relike your page. Change away! And, you’re welcome, Scott. :)

    Hi,

I have over 200 likes on my facebook business page, I would like to change my name and just take out 1 word but I dont have any supporting documents at the moment, is there a way of getting around that and being able to change my name??

    Thanks

Just go ahead and try to change it and see what happens. I’m guessing it will go through.

If you have an organization, you should be using a page, not a profile. You’ll want to convert it.

When you change your business name, will a notification go out to everyone who likes the page? I would like to avoid this if possible.
