Social Media vs SEO – Can’t we all just get along?
Short Answer: YES! Social Media and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) work together beautifully, so you really shouldn’t choose one or the other when deciding how best to invest your time and budget when promoting your pharmacy or other business online.
The Case for SEO
Since you want to be found (usually by people using search engines), you must pay attention to SEO. It should be acknowledged that Facebook, Twitter and even Google+ are becoming tools for searching in their own right.
Adding fresh content, using the right keywords, and basic SEO strategy will go a long way in improving your search engine rankings and bringing in more qualified visitors. Always write for the readers, not the search engines.
The Case for Social Media
Because social media has become an ingrained part of our culture, once people find you, they expect your site and blog to be engaging and interactive. Having become wary of company marketing, they also want to see what others are saying about your products and services. So, it is beneficial to have a strong social presence as well.
Blogging is sometimes characterized as a social media endeavor, but it also works incredibly well for improving search engine results when you consistently produce valuable keyword-rich content. In fact, according to a recent HubSpot study, companies with a blog receive 55% more website visitors, 97% more inbound links and 434% more indexed pages, when compared to non-blogging companies. More indexed pages and inbound links = better search engine ranking!
The viral nature of social media can also bring more visitors to your website. Sharing pages and posts from your company website on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube and others presents your content and your company to many more eyes than a website or blog could expect alone. Social Media vs SEO – One or the Other?
Competing marketers will say that “Search is Dead.” or “Social Media is not profitable.” These assertions are oversimplifications of a fairly complex debate. In reality, social media and SEO are powerful tools for creating brand recognition and increasing exposure when used together.
How Social Media and SEO Work Together
Try a Google search for ‘Compounding Pharmacy Wilmington NC’. If you are logged out (logging in may personalize results), the first page of results shows two Facebook pages. Much to the surprise of many suspicious of Google, the search engine giant does not appear to be indiscriminately favoring Google+ Pages and related updates. Several similar searches also showed an apparent favoritism for Facebook Pages.
If you were to perform the same search while logged in to Google, viewing personal results (or “Google Search Plus Your World“) would first show you results from businesses connected to you on Google+. Twitter results are also fairly likely to show up in the first page of a Google search. For more details, check out this Social Network Visibility Study.
Integrate your efforts by adding social sharing buttons to your website and blog to allow visitors to share your content with their connections. Publish all your new content to your social media platforms. Encourage your employees to comment, like, share, reTweet, etc. for greater exposure.
Make it easy for those visiting your social profiles to find your website or blog. Make sure to include a very visible link.
- Invest in both social media and SEO and make sure to integrate content and sharing
- Blog consistently
- Be open to change as new methods prove effective.
