Behind every successful company lies a good marketing strategy. But what if your company is about as interesting as listening to Ben Stein sell Visine? Boring businesses are a reality, but they don’t need to be a marketer’s nightmare. In fact, plenty of companies are marketing “boring” businesses successfully. What’s their secret? Try their four strategies for boring business success!

Change Your Thinking

Think that great marketing requires a hot product? Since most products and services don’t fall into this category, you have to know that’s not true. Letting a “boring” business model discourage you may mean you’re being too literal and you need to think outside your self-imposed box!

Take BlendTec for example. I don’t know about you, but I would never use the word “exciting” to describe a blender. Show me a commercial focused on the actual features of the blender and I leave the room to refill my drink. It’s boring.

However, BlendTec’s marketing strategy is anything but boring. Products are marketed with a faux scientist blending items requested by fans. Does it work? Yes! Fans love to watch this mad scientist in action. In fact, this video, featuring an iPad being blended, has gone viral with over 15 million views!

Can you get creative, fetauring your products and services in a fun way? You may find the result is loyal fans.

Use Humor to Market Your Business

Humor sells. For example: If I say “Mayhem,” what do you think of? I immediately think of Allstate’s fabulously funny commercial line featuring a careless character, aptly named Mayhem. With this quirky character, we laugh while we’re reminded of a very real danger – finding yourself without insurance. Hilarity grabs our attention, while the message slips in through the backdoor. Well done, AllState.

Memes are a simple way to add humor to your marketing strategy. Don Caldwell of Know Your Meme told Rachel Martin on NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday that the best memes “say something about the person who’s sharing them” — such as “What People Think I Do.” Need help creating effective memes? No problem, we covered that here.

Market Your Business as a Real Person

People buy from people they like and trust. Nobody wants to read post, tweets or blogs full of jargon and business babble. Creating the feeling that fans are interacting with a person rather than

a business is key.

G.E. did a fantastic job of this using their Pinterest account. Their board “G.E. Garages” is located next to a board entitled “Hey Girl.” This humanizes the company – it no longer feels cold, but develops a personality with the user.

An act of ingenuity on the part of G.E. was playing off the ever popular Ryan Gosling memes. G.E replaced Gosling with Thomas Edison, using the sentence “Hey girl, I heard you like music, so I invented the phonograph.” It’s trendy, funny and propels the company from corporate to human.

G.E. also sets a stellar example of interacting with their customers. A quick glace on the “Hey Girl” board alone, shows no comment is left unanswered. This is crucial in building loyal customers.

Feature Related Topics

Marketing a boring business requires creative thinking. Try featuring related topics. Own a pharmacy? Why not use the related topic of “wellness” to your advantage, with articles featuring vitamins, nutrition and health. Work in real estate? Feature home safety. For a local garbage disposal company, share articles on composting and recycling. With a bit of imagination, the possibilities are endless.

Marketing a boring business is possible. Challenge yourself to stand out from the crowd with humor and creativity. Need advice on where to start? We would be more than happy to help. Contact us today!
