How to set up your Google Plus Business Page
Just like with Facebook, Google+ allows for personal and business accounts – profiles and pages! Assuming you already know why it is so important for your business to be on Google+, you’re ready to get your business on Google Plus and start taking advantage of the SEO benefits – so let’s get started.
Setting up your Google Plus Business Page
- Log in to your Google account, go to Google Plus, and create a new page.
- Choose your category:
- Local Business or Place – Best for Hotels, Restaurants, stores and services. Local pages are designed to help people locate the business using its physical address.
- Product or Brand – Clothing, automobiles, electronics, financial services – Good for larger companies, where physical location is not as important.
- Company, Institution or Organization – The choice for most small and medium-sized businesses where local is not of prime concern.
- Arts, Entertainment or Sports
- Other
Note: Don’t worry too much about choosing the right category. Your biggest decision will be “Local Business or Place“? or something else.
- Enter the name, website, choose an “appropriate for” level. Agree to Page Terms and continue.
- I’m setting up Google+ Page for the Social Media Club of Wilmington, NC, so I chose Company, Institution or Organization. My next options are to fill in my story (10 words about us) and a contact email. I’ll use appropriate keywords in my “Story” so the page will be easy to find.
-
Choose your cover photos. Cover photos are now 2120 x 1192 pixels! You can include any marketing message you like – so get creative. Don’t try to use a smaller image, as resizing will make it appear blurry.
- Upload a profile photo. If your logo is recognizable, you can use that. If your business is more personal, you might use a photo of yourself. If you mainly sell one product or service, find a way to depict that. The profile photo must be at least 250x250px, but your entire image will be inside a circle, so increasing the canvas size but leaving your image size a bit smaller might work out well. Experiment here – try an image with transparent background or drop shadows. After you upload your image, you can rotate it, or try “Creative Kit” for some fun options.
Tip: Get yourself a short URL to make sharing a link to your page easier at Plus.ly.
Using Google Plus as Your Page
Log in to your Google Account and hover over the “Pages” icon in the sidebar. You can switch to a page from there, or, if you have more pages than will appear on hover, click on the Pages Icon and “Switch to this page” for the page you wish to manage. You are now using Google Plus as your page.
To switch back to yourself, again hover over the Pages icon and select your name. It’s that easy! Now you’re ready to move on to sharing and networking on Google Plus. The principals are much the same as for personal use.
