Quality Pinterest Images Made Easy

Pop quiz! What do Pinterest, quality images, and wine have in common? Still guessing? Let me explain.

What’s Wine Got to do With It?

My husband is a smart guy, but when I talk about social media, I might as well be speaking gibberish. This is only appropriate since he’s a social media virgin (gasp!).

Quality Pinterest Images Made Easy http://scalablesocialmedia.com/2015/03/pinterest-quality-images/ via @scalablesocialAbout a month ago, I was trying to explain why so much of my job is tied up in creating quality images for client Pinterest accounts. To make my point I decided to illustrate it with a subject he could relate to: wine.

Before I offend any wine connoisseurs, let’s get one thing straight: we know nothing about wine. Sure, we know there are red wines and white wines, some have bubbles, some are sweet and some are dry – but that’s where our knowledge of wine ends. The only thing we are sure of, is that food always tastes better when paired with a glass of wine.

Now, let me tell you about what this has to do with Pinterest marketing.

Quality Images Move People To Action

Do you know how we choose a bottle of wine? I wish I was joking, but for us, its all about the label. This small, simple design is the deciding influence on whether or not that bottle of wine makes its way to my dinner table. Why is that?

Well, aside from our lack of knowledge about wine, we are, just like you – visual beings. Scientists stand behind the fact that 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual, and that images are processed 60 thousand times faster in the brain than text.

What’s the lesson? Visuals play a huge role in the customer’s decision making process.

Quality Pinterest Images = Higher Engagement

Social media is more  visual than ever before and the competition is stiff. This is especially true of sites like Pinterest and Instagram where brands rely more on images than text to market their brand. This visual trend means quality images are more important than ever before.

Creating An Epic Pinterest Image

Ready to take you Pinterest graphics up a notch? Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Size matters. When it comes to images on Pinterest, size matters. Tall, skinny images have the highest click-through rate on Pinterest. Shoot for images that are 735 pixels x 1102 pixels. If you use a design program like Canva, they do the leg work for you. Just choose the Pinterest template. They even have ready made layouts for you to choose from!
  • Use quality images. You get one shot at a first impression and choosing a quality image ensures it’s a good one. Purchasing images from BigStock or iStockphoto guarantees quality images and designs. When choosing a photo try to avoid images that scream “stock photo”. Warm hues, and lifestyle shots will deliver better results.
  • Design. A great pin pulls people in, prompting users to click. It also includes a clear message of what users can expect to find when they click your pin. You can do all this and more with design sites like Canva and PicMonkey. Play with fonts and add chic design elements. Do it right and your competitors will be wondering how you afford a graphic designer.
  • Make sure to add a link! I know, I know, links have nothing to do with design. You’re right. But don’t forget the reason we’re creating these epic images in the first place, is to direct prospective customers off of Pinterest and on to your website. Make sure you include a link when uploading your image to Pinterest or all your hard work will be in vain.

Taking the time to create quality images can be the difference between success and failure of your content.

What design elements have you found get the most clicks on Pinterest? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!
