Reordering Links in WordPress

So, you don’t want your links displayed in alphabetical order?   I don’t blame you!  It should be a simple fix, and there have been plugins that have accomplished this in the past, but there aren’t any that work with the latest versions of WordPress.

First, it is important that you know that your links are displayed in a widget (Appearance>Widgets).  If you look in Widgets under “Sidebar1” you will see a box that says “Links”.  Expand that box and you will see that it is set to display all categories of links and to show link image.

The easiest way to prepare for the next adjustment would be to go to Links>Links and delete all the links you want to reorder.  Otherwise they are going to show up in the Links widget and the new one that you are going to create.  Make sure you have a list of the links somewhere for the next step.

Go back to Appearance>Widgets.

From the middle column of the page, grab the grey rectangle labled “Text” and drag and drop it to the desired position on the Sidebar1. Title the text block (for example, “Other Links”). Then copy this code into your text box:

<ul class=’snap_preview xoxo blogroll’>

<li><a href=january/>January 2010</a></li>

<li><a href=”http://LINK HERE”>TITLE</a></li>

<li><a href=”http://LINK HERE”>TITLE</a></li>

<li><a href=”http://LINK HERE”>TITLE</a></li>

<li><a href=”http://LINK HERE”>TITLE</a></li>

</ul>

Make sure to include from <ul class=’snap…… to </ul>.

If your URL doesn’t work as expected, try just including the name of the page as I did for January.  Maybe not the most elegant solution, but it works!

  1. HTML might be harder to update, but it is definitely less vulnerable with fewer chances of people cracking it (ie, javascript and ajax)

  2. Hi! Would you mind if I share your blog with my myspace group?
    There’s a lot of folks that I think would really enjoy your content. Please let me know. Thank you
